Institute for Information Transmission Problems, 1998

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Institute for Information Transmission Problems (IPPI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded on the initiative of Professor A.A.Kharkevich (1909-1965), member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. It was designed to solve problems bearing upon the progress of information theory and its applications, upon the development of principles of integrated systems of information transmission and distribution (the structures of communication networks and switching centers, the problems of control, the teletraffic theory), and upon automatic pattern recognition (reading machines, recognition of images, speech recognition). The formal birthday of the Institute is December 29, 1961 - the date when the decision of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences entitled ⌠On the reorganization of the Laboratory of information transmission systems into the Institute for Information Transmission Problems■ was issued. By the same decision academician A.A.Kharkevitch was nominated director of the Institute.

The first principal fields of research, initiated in the newly founded Institute, were studies in the fundamentals of information and coding theory; formulation and development of the conception of an integrated automated communication network; new approaches in pattern recognition theory; and new approaches in picture processing. 1963 saw the commencement of studies on information processes in living nature after the laboratory of vision biophysics headed by Professor N.D.Nyberg (1899-1967) was transferred to this Institute from the Biophysics Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

After the decease of academician A.A.Kharkevitch Professor V.I.Siforov, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, became the director of the Institute and held this position since 1966 till 1989. Over these years a number of new laboratories were organized - those of complicated information systems, digital methods of information processing, digital optics, learning systems of behavior organization, computer linguistics, and communication networks.

At present the IPPI's basic directions of researches are the information theory and applied mathematics, computer and communication sciences in technique, management, language and living systems. Among the most important topics researched by the Institute are problems of the theory of nonlinear analysis of complex systems, multicomponent homogeneous random systems, information transmission, queuing theory, coding and cryptography, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence, information distribution and computer networks, the theory of linguistic communication and linguistic processes (including machine translation), statistical methods of information processing and control, the theory and methods of image processing (including data compression), intellectual partner computing and information systems, information transmission and processing in live objects, sensory systems, motion control in live systems and robotics.

There is a stable scientific body of highly trained and young specialists, composed of mathematicians, physicists, biologists, linguists, programmers and engineers in the Institute - in all near 320 collaborators in 1997.

Now there are 9 members and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other academies, 205 full professors and doctors of sciences, honorary members of foreign academies, laureates of Russian state and international prizes.

The Institute has founded and publishes two academic periodicals: ⌠Problems of Information Transmission■ and ⌠Automation and Remote Control■ which are circulated in Russia and abroad.

The Institute organizes the all-Russian and international conferences and workshops. In 1997 there were 5 international conferences and seminars:

There are postgraduate courses and doctorates with honors in IPPI for Russian and foreign young specialists.

The Institute's scientific potential was instrumental in giving rise to its collaboration with the well-known universities and scientific centers of such countries as USA, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, France, Austria, Italy, Israel, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Hungary, Czechia, Slovak Republic, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Australia etc., in all - more than 50 Agreements and contracts in 1997.

On the basis of the Institute were formed The Information Theory Chapter of IEEE in Russia and two scientific departments of The World Laboratory.

The internal structure of the Institute in 1997 consisted 16 laboratories, 2 sectors, scientific-organization department, some servicing departments and administration.

The financing sources in 1997 were: State budget (through The Russian Academy of Sciences - near 50% of the whole financing), grants from Russian State Programs (through The Russian Ministry of Science and Technical Policy - near 30% of the whole financing) and other funds (Russian Foundation for Basic Research, International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union-INTAS, etc.), some applied agreements.

It is hoped that this annual report introducing the activities and results of the Institute in 1997 will assist overseas organizations to better understand the Institute and also promote exchanges between our Institute and research institutions overseas.

MAIN RESULTS

The problem of estimation of the finite dimensional parameter in a partial linear model is considered. Upper and lower bounds for the second minimax order risk were derived and it was shown that the second order minimax estimator is a penalized maximum likelihood estimator. It is well known that the performance of the estimator is depending on the choice of a smoothing parameter. A practically feasible adaptive procedure for the penalization choice is proposed.

Asymptotic expansion for the probability distribution of Markov process with fast and slow switching; The best in the order of convergence to 0 estimators of coefficients of SPDE; Kalman type estimators for the signal and its derivatives are constructed for the signal observed in the gaussian white noise (GWN).These estimators have the best order of convergence of risks to 0 for the small noise. The problem estimation of input signal in the situation when output signal is observed in the GWN of small intensity is considered .The best in the order of convergence risks to 0 estimators are found for different kinds of a priori information concerning input signal. Kolmogorov epsilon-entropy estimates were proved for the reaction-diffusion systems and for other equations of mathematical physics. It was found out the dependence of this epsilon-entropy on the epsilon-entropy of the hull of external forces which depend on time.

The approximation of trajectory attractors of non-autonomous partial differential evolution equations was studied using trajectory attractors of the corresponding Galerkin approximation systems. Traveling waves of dissipative non-autonomous hyperbolic equations and reaction-diffusion systems in cylindrical domains were studied. Attractors of these traveling waves were constructed.

A version of ergodic theorem for individual random sequences is formulated and proved on the base of Kolmogorov's approach to the substantiation of the theory of probability and information theory. Estimates of applicability of the law of the longest head-run in terms of Kolmogorov complexity are presented.

The activity was continued for the investigations of asymptotically linear degenerate vector fields and boundary value problems for ordinary and partial differential equations. New results were obtained on vector fields which have both degenerate linear parts and ⌠next order■ nonlinear terms. In this case it is necessary to take into account the velocity of tending to zero of nonlinearities infinitesimal at infinity. The equations with unbounded sequences of solutions were considered. For the case of simple linear part degeneration, some sharp conditions were presented of existence of such sequences. The existence of these sequences was studied for the problem of forced periodic oscillations in control systems.

A new linguistic approach to analysis of the dynamics of hybrid (discrete-continuous) systems was developed. Main results obtained in this framework concern timed automata. Timed regular expressions (TRE) were introduced. TRE are a generalization of classical regular expression to discrete-valued continuous-time signals. Expressive equivalence of TRE to timed automata was proved, and translation algorithms allowing to pass from an automaton to a TRE and backwards were developed. In the same framework, a new class of quasilinear equations on timed languages and an algorithm for their solution were introduced. An application of these equations to timed automata was proposed.

A design of hybrid networks which can guarantee zero loss probability for type 1 traffic while allowing some losses for type 2 traffic was proposed.

The study of systems with hysteresis nonlinearities was continued. For the Ishlinskii and Mroz models of stress-strain relations in elasto-plastic bodies the inverse hysteresis nonlinearities were constructed; these nonlinearities are dual models of strain-stress relations. The situations when the Cauchy problem for differential equations with hysteresis terms (generalized lufts, Mroz nonlinearities) has continuum of solutions were analyzed. A method was suggested to study the Hopf bifurcation for autonomous systems with hysteresis of various types: Ishlinskii models of plasticity, scalar and vector models of magnetics etc. New conditions for the asymptotic stability of oscillations in nonlinear ODE systems with respect to small hysteresis perturbations were discovered. Memorizing properties of hysteresis models such as the expanding play were studied; on this basis, two realization theorems were proved.

The method of potential nonmonotone bounds was developed to study systems with impulse perturbations. The results were used to analyze boundary-value problems for ordinary and partial differential equations.

Distributions of basic characteristics of new classes of random mappings with an absorbing centre were calculated. Results explain some phenomena occurring in computer simulations of complex dynamical systems. Some discrete optimization problems arising in analysis of controllability and stabilization of cycles in discrete time chaotic systems were considered.

The signal stability and the role of perturbation was studied in feedback systems describing some classes of analog memory systems.

New conditions were obtained for transitivity, shadowing and stability in discrete-time set-valued dynamical systems with convex and star-shaped graphs. Comparative properties of three metrics in the space of differences of convex sets has been studied; the results can be used in nonsmooth optimization methods.

Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for guaranteed detection of failure in combinative circuits. These circuits realize symmetric Boolean function. The detection is reached by the simplest algebraic means. The upper bound of cardinality of hash-codes is obtained. This bound is the best at present. The wide class of hash-codes is constructed.

It was shown that it is possible to consider the description of new (at given context) letter independently of message itself, corresponding new problem of universal coding was formulated and two approximate solutions of it were proposed. Information-theoretic study of unconditional (not connect with complexity of deciphering) security of secrecy systems and of two approaches to increasing of it were fulfilled. It was constructed low density convolutional codes and developed an iterative algorithm of decoding of this codes and introduced algorithm of transmission in forward link of CDMA system.

MAIN RESULTS

In the area of formalizing the mathematical models of images the investigation of various known metrical characteristics (measures, variance, variations, entropy), which can be applied for the quantitative estimation of the major image properties were performed. It was shown that any monochromatic, flat and stationary image within the limits of geometric optics belongs to a class of two-dimensional functions of bounded variations. The advantages of non-quadratic metrics in solving the extremal problems was also demonstrated in the case, when the large jumps of brightness on the image have to be preserved. The numerical experiments were performed for estimating the applicability of metric characteristics, mentioned above. The results of experiments show that flat and plane variations describe the geometric complexity of an image much better than the other measures, like variance and entropy.

On the basis of multicomponent image model the non-linear rank methods for decomposing of gray-scale and color images were developed.

The new results in the area of discrete-continuos systems with linear dependence on unbounded control were obtained. It was shown that for involutive systems the jumps representation can be obtained, as well as in commutative case, in the form of superposition of fundamental solutions of the auxiliary system of differential equation. Being applied to the evolution type partial differential equations, describing the sequence of affine transformation of some original plane image, this approach gives a compact representation of the image sequence, and can be implemented for compression of these sequence of images.

In the area of joint process and observation control the problem with state dependent noise in observation was considered. The new results for observation in the class of linear filters were obtained: it was proved the separation theorem and the existence theorem for the optimal discrete-continuos observation control.

The optimal control problem for hybrid (discrete-continuous) system was considered in the case when the continuous behavior can be controlled and discontinuities arise when the system achieves the boundary of some set. If the discontinuities can be considered as a result of some impulsive inputs, they can be represented in feedback form as the intermediate conditions. To overcome various types of irregularities such as: nonextandability of solution or sliding mode, which can arise in this systems, the jumps of solution were described by some shift operator, and this approach gives the opportunity to reduce this problem to the standard problem of nonsmooth optimization and obtain the representation of the optimal solution by differential equation with a measure and to prove the existence theorem for optimal solution.

The research of reconstruction problem for operators of singular convolution type with noncomplete (discrete) information was prolonged. The problem was studied in case when the operator range space includes discontinuous functions and one used the high-resolution reconstruction algorithms. A new method based on extracting of discontinuous component of solution to estimate the reconstruction error was developed. This approach allows to prove the convergence of wide class of reconstruction algorithms at points of the solution continuity (for certain class of operator). The concept of the discontinuity localization by the appropriate algorithm was formalized. It was proved that the high-resolution algorithms can localize the discontinuities of the first kind. The theoretical results were confirmed by experiment.

The development was conducted in the framework of project 96-07-89028 supported by Russian Foundation for Basic Research. The development was devoted to the elaboration of effective lossless data compression method for archival color photo-documents. The method, which is based on the component transformation with pixel interpolation was algorithmically realized. The corresponding software to integrate color image coder/decoder into general purpose database management system (DBMS) was developed. This software was used at of end user workplace that designed for the user interaction with the database of photo-documents from LAFOKI RAS archive.

As a part of project 037.03.326.191/1-96 of the Program for Informatization of Russia, the investigation was conducted for image database representation in the Internet. Those database may contain binary (black-and-white), gray-scale and true color images simultaneously. The first version of the Web-site was constructed. It presents some stuff from digital photo-archive LAFOKI RAS as well as Handwritten cardfile of Old Russian Language from the Institute of Russian Language, Russian Academy of Sciences.

The research was prolonged in the field of user-friendly man-machine interface creation. Such an interface comprises audio and visual channels for communication, and may be used e.g. for interaction with digital image archives as well as in virtual reality systems.

MAIN RESULTS

Original methods and tools for the input and processing of archive photo- documents were developed. The database has been created for archive photo-documents that were collected and stored in LAFOKI of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Methods for classification of watermarks from ancient manuscripts and books were developed. The relational database of the watermarks has been created. The database contains the main part of known watermarks collected in Klosterneuburg (Austria). The unitary relational database of ancient manuscripts and books, which contains the classified watermarks, data about their issues and places of the storage has been created as well. A special unified software has been elaborated to automate the creation of watermark descriptions and their registration in the created database

Software tools were created for DBMS management. Special software for two workplaces was developed to provide a complete technological circuit for creation and application of a digital archive. The first workplace - "The Restorer Workstation" serves the analysis, processing, and the compression of the archiving images. The second one -"The User Workstation" is designed for the interaction of the user with the developed databases. It puts at one Ёs disposal different ways for linking the workstation with the archive.

Experimental measurement of the target location in nonoverlapping background was carried out with the use of different linear filter-detectors. The accuracy of target location was compared with that one evaluated theoretically. The computer simulation showed a good agreement between theoretical and experimental results for various kinds of correlation filters and input noisy scenes and confirmed that the generalized matched filter had the best performance in terms of location accuracy for the case of white and colored nonoverlapping noise.

A new correlation filter - generalized phase-only filter (GPOF)- was proposed for nonoverlapping model of the background. It yields a good performance in terms of location error. GPOF is attractive for the optical implementation, as it possesses the highest diffraction efficiency.

Color pattern recognition of color images based on projection preprocessing of red-green- blue components and single-channel matched filtering has been proposed. This approach simplifies pattern recognition as it reduces multichannel correlation to single-channel one. We have optimized parameters of projection preprocessing and correlation filters in terms of noise robustness. A phase-only filter optimized in terms of signal-to-noise ratio has been proposed for optical pattern recognition. The computer simulation was applied to test the correlation performance of the proposed filters with that one of conventional multichannel filtering.

Extraction of morphological 3D information using a temporal image sequence was investigated. The obtained information was applied to generate the sequence of stereo pairs. Criteria for extraction of morphological 3D information have been proposed. New algorithms have been offered to extract the 3D information and to use it for generation of the sequence of stereo pairs.

The analysis of recent hardware and software tools for multimedia was carried out. Basic algorithms of image processing have been proposed for development of the modern multimedia netware and compact disk applications (for CD-ROM, CD-I, VCD, CD-DA, Photo-CD and DVD formats). Recording several master CD-ROM disks has been fulfilled.

Methods of computer-assisted image analysis and interpretation were created. The methods for measuring some feature values directly in images were developed for computerized evaluation of some discriminative features, stored in the database of image descriptions. The statistics were proposed to replace or/and to add expert feature estimations with the values of the measured statistics. These values were used for creation of Formal Decision Rules (FDRs) for the image classification in the problem of early lung cancer diagnosis. Experiments show that computerized feature analysis improves the accuracy and reliability of differential lung cancer diagnosis and helps to realize unbiased expert-independent image analysis.

MAIN RESULTS

Error Control Codes and Information Transmission

The following problems have been under consideration:

Most of efforts during 1997 have been devoted to studying of a code properties , decoding algorithms and theirs complexity. One group of results gives a new proof, via matroid invariants, of MacWilliams identities for support weight distribution of linear codes. Expose a link between binomial moments of distance distribution of a code, distribution of subcode dimensions in the code, and the probability of undetected error for this code. There was formulated a linear programming problem for binomial moments and derived new lower bounds on the probability of undetected error. This approach is extended to quantum error correcting codes (work in progress).

Other group of results introduces a new family of sequences with low periodic correlation. Gives a proof of complexity bounds of some known decoding algorithms of linear codes and introduce a new algorithm of complexity exponentially smaller than of the known ones. As one of interesting results it can be mentioned an introduction of codes correcting localized erasures and two constructions of almost optimal codes with linear-time encoding and decoding.

The introduction of new class of ⌠separable code■ should be mentioned as a special result that includes known classes of group code. There is proven that the minimal trellis of a separable code is unique and has the maximal Euler characteristic. As a consequence of this result the complexity of Viterby decoder of such a code is minimal. Additionally it is proven that the new class of separable codes includes Hadard code, Levenstain, and Delsart, Getals, and Kerdock, and Nordstrom-Robinson code.

Investigation of a concatenated constructions with a convolutional code gives a new bound for active code distance and examples when this construction has the similar distance properties as usual convolutional code but has lower complexity of decoding.

The next group of results contains an investigation of codes correcting two dimensional blots of errors and erasures. There is found a bound for cardinality of such codes and is given quasioptimal class of codes correcting two dimensional burst of errors or erasures. These codes have better parameters than known code constructions.

Finally, a research-expository paper with complexity issues is finished now. It includes a number of results on algorithmic complexity related to linear codes, ranging from basic to rather advanced, usually with complete proofs. It provides a unified treatment of many algorithmic problems for linear codes, organizing previously unrelated results into a self-contained part of coding theory.

Research of coding and channel estimation in multi-access mobile radio systems gives the following results. The first one contains a comparison of the capacity estimation of the mobile OFDM transmission scheme for uniform signal power distribution in the frequency domain and for ⌠water filling■ principle. It was shown that "water filling" dives a small enough increment in capacity in the used model of random mobile radio channel. The other one reports on a performance of the indoor channel estimator of the Kalman type for the clusterized channel model. The main property of the estimator is good enough quality of the simultaneous estimates of the Power Delay Profile of a random indoor channel, and its current impulse response function, and the channel noise level at low mean SNR (less 10 dB) . Finally there was investigated a new coding scheme for CDMA based on a special concatenation of convolutional low-density and Hamming codes. A new decoding algorithm for the case gives an increment in capacity of CDMA in comparison with other known CDMA schemes.

Research of combinatorial problems in a vector space, and in graph theory gives solution for a number of actual problems. Between them the problem of partition of n-cube or n-lattice on a k parts with equal number of vertices. The other one is a graph embedding problem with the minimum of "edge-congestion" that arises in applications of finite element method in a 2-lattice . There is considered a embedding problem for quasilattices of the depth 1 into 2-lattice. It is shown that the problem is NP-full. But for few types of quasilattices a polynomial solution is found. One more embedding problem is considered for the trees of the caterpillar type in a n-cube. There is found a new approach that gives all known results as a special case.

A covering problem in a vector space is another direction of investigation. There are proposed a few constructions of linear and nonlinear, binary and nonbinary covering codes. A number of new infinite families of covering codes are obtained with use of the new constructions.

In the field of Cryptography and Authentication there is found a new method for fast authentication and a series of papers on modern cryptography problems is done for a public journal.

The fast authentication method is based on a generalization of MDS residue codes onto a set of random low weight polynomial and a method of fast polynomial evaluation in the randomly chosen point of a finite field.

The series of papers on cryptography gives a very full review of classic and new theoretic results and a practice of theirs implementation for data transmission or protection, for data access, for bank operations, and other functions, including review of international cryptographic standards.

During this year co-operation has been continued with universities of Germany, Denmark, Sweden . Communication problems is the most active area for joint research. In co-operation with Ulm University and The Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany) a problems of coded modulation and capacity of a mobile channel were considered. Concatenation based on unit memory convolutional codes and ⌠turbo■ encoding-decoding were the problems of most intensive research with the Technical University of Denmark (Lyngby). The joint research of concatenated convolutional codes is the most longevous topic with Lund University in Sweden. A new point for joint research in covering codes and caps in projective geometry area was activated last year in Helsinki University of Technology (Finland). Some members of the laboratory are involved in joint research with the Research Center of the Bell Labs (USA) and University Padeborn (Germany).

An international activity of the coding group is confirmed by participation in the IEEE International conference on Information Theory (Ulm, Germany), and in the 4th Int. Symp. on Communication theory and applications (England). At 1997 have been started a preparatory job for the International Conference in Pskov (1998, Russia).

Geoinformation Technologies

Geoinformation technology and Instrumental Environment GEO are developed for designing problem oriented systems for space and time prediction in Earth sciences. The technology integrates the geographic information system technology (GIS) with case-based and knowledge-based system technologies.

The technology is based on information models of processes and phenomena to be forecast. The information model describes a phenomenon under study by computer realized formalisms (knowledge and data bases, algorithms). For designing of an information model the different information types are used: descriptive and intuitive expert knowledge, data mining, problem oriented methodology of data processing. As new data and knowledge inputted the information model is evaluated and prediction power is increased. The information model includes the following components: structured data and formalized knowledge, the features processed from original geological an geophysical data, the versions of forecast function (a formal relationship between predicted values and the features), the space-time representation of forecast values and forecast accuracy analysis, a causal model of the phenomenon describing the derived formalisms in the problem field terms.

Geoinformation technology GEO is applied for a solution of the following basic problems:

There are the following main results :

Co-operation is continuing with the Laboratory of Applied Logic (Hungary), the Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics (IRSM), Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and State Seismological Bureau of China. The research results were reported on the conferences and workshops in Austria, Belgium, Greece, Italy.

Partner Systems

The Partner System group concentrates on the project of integrated instrumental environment for knowledge processing and data analysis in weakly formalized fields such as medicine. Partner System (PS) is a tool for support of applied system creation that enables knowledge and data cumulating, interchange, integration and enlargement in the result of knowledge discovery in the databases.

Basing on the experience in different application fields, PS group suggested the so-called syndromes framework. Syndrome is a network of simple threshold decision elements. It proved to be easy conceivable by user and flexible enough to represent sophisticated models. This method enables to reflect and transmit both verbal expert knowledge and non-verbal components of personal knowledge (symptoms subjective significance, similarity measure and others). The other source of such components elicitation is the technology of precedents interactive analysis. Special graphic visualization tools help user construct and browse through syndrome network, and then investigate its behavior on the different classes of cases.

The first PS prototype helped to create the applied medical systems that have found use in several clinics. On the base of this prototype the new PS shell scaleable version is now being designed in co-operation with Applied Logic Laboratory, Budapest, Hungary.

PS group efforts in Data Mining concentrate on the following directions:

The developed Syndrome analysis method is oriented to human comprehension of modeling results and to interactive data analysis. Two kinds of programs are designed implementing the approach: pure interactive and automated. In both cases user interaction is enforced by special active graphic interface. PS group now developing a program which will help user optimally combine automated and interactive mechanisms in model building.

The Fragment-Potential method is something in between the neural networks and decision trees. It can be roughly described as generating a set of independent decision trees, then taking overall decision by voting. This technique yielded the most powerful results with marketing data. Since 1993 PS group deals with the problems of market analysis, including direct mail optimization; revenue modeling; classification of clients; prediction of client behavior for banking and insurance. Results were always competing, and in many cases the best in comparison to conventional methods. In cooperation with CROSS/Z Int., USA the system of response modeling is designed.

The main problems under consideration now are the integration of different Partner System applications on the common data base and creation of applied PS by the way of integrated knowledge base projection. The system prototype was created to support these technologies.

Inverse Problem for the Vocal Tract

The estimation of stability and variability for inverse problem solution was carried out for errors in the measurements of acoustic parameters. For this purpose, there were constructed two kinds of calibrating curves: the variations of computed resonance frequencies for the first three resonances as the functions of random variation of articulatory parameters, and mean-square errors of articulatory parameters found in the inverse problem solution for random errors in resonance frequency measurements in the speech signal. It was found, that the developed method of inverse problem solving provides stable solution for the investigated vowels, and the solution error is in the range 0.2% to 4.5% when the resonance frequencies are varying in the range -20% to +20% with respect to the original values. In the framework of the investigation of optimality criteria for the dynamic inverse problem, there was found a class of functions for the control of articulatory organ movements, that provides good approximation of the measured trajectories of articulators. It is the class of disrupt linear time functions.

MAIN RESULTS

The study of links between algebraic geometry and number theory on the one hand and coding theory on the other hand was continued. Generalized weights on Grassmanians and Veroneze varieties and Del Pezzo surfaces were partly calculated. Investigations of asymptotic properties of zeta-functions is continued. We developed a combinatorial approach to special divisors and secant divisors on curves over finite fields based on their relations with error-correcting codes. Applying to linear systems on curves over finite fields numerous coding theory bounds one gets a lot of bounds on their dimensions. This approach works for curves with many rational points, which leads, for example, to certain ameliorations of Cliffords's theorem for such curves. We investigate for a cyclic elliptic over a fixed finite field the set of extensions of the ground field over which the curve is still cyclic, and give some bounds for the density of such extensions.

The asymptotics for information rate in some stationary non-Gaussian channels was investigated. We study modulus for trigonometrical sums of polynomials of a special form on finite fields. We got bounds on the capacity of multiple packings.

We study the known in the combinatorial analysis the problem about the sets of the universal hash-functions by the methods of coding theory. We got new lower bounds for the number of such functions.

It is obtained the non-stationary distribution (in terms of the double transforms) of the random counting measure representing the transient state of the M/GI/1 queues under the egalitarian and foreground-background processor-sharing disciplines. The results hold not only for the stability condition but even for oversaturated systems. It is also found the joint non-stationary distribution of the virtual sojourn time and the number of customers at time t for the M/GI/1 system with egalitarian processor-sharing (in terms of the triple transforms).

We study the asymptotic behavior of the closed queuing networks as the number of its nodes increases to infinity.

We construct a theory of metastable states on mathematical level. We pioneered the definition of the metastability for the models in the infinite volume. We show by the example of the Ising model that the metastable (non-Gibbsian) states for positive magnetic fields are in some sense continuations of the Gibbsian states for negative magnetic fields.

We develop a basis of the theory of almost Gibbsian fields. The theory of contact of a phase interface with a wall of the enveloping volume is appears to be of a fundamental importance.

We analyze a non-Gibbsian field, generated by ensemble of external contours of the Ising model. We prove the presence of a phase transition with respect to the magnetic field.

We consider the model of directed polymers interacting with random environment and the model of a random walk in a random, varying in time environment. We prove that the distribution for the end point of the polymer (as the position of a walking particle) asymptotically have the Gaussian form, and we find (random) corrections in the distribution.

We obtain a special cluster expansion for the limit Gibbs state of the quantum crystal.

We construct one-particle invariant subspaces for the quantum lattice Hamiltonian (the case of a compact spin). These subspaces could be interpreted as elementary excitations of the ground state. We study the spectrum of the Hamiltonian on these subspaces.

We investigate the region where exists the unique Gibbsian state for the continuous model of the classical gas of particles interacting by a pair potential.

We start to study a new class of models √ stochastic disordered systems. We analyze the spectrum of the generator for the stochastic dynamics generated by one-dimensional Ising model with random potential (for any temperatures). We prove that with probability 1 the spectrum of the generator is non-random, we have the localization and a gap in the spectrum.

We study generalized phase transitions of the localization-delocalization type from one to several Sinai-Bowen-Ruelle measures in finite networks of chaotic elements with general graph of interactions in the weak coupling limit.

The stochastic stability for chaotic maps in a class of general Markov random perturbations (including singular ones) is proved.

We elaborate in detail the operator approach to study statistical properties of complex chaotic dynamical systems with singularities and their stability/localization under the action of random, quasirandom and deterministic perturbations of round-off errors type.

The theory of shifted (or interpolation) Jack polynomials, which we developed earlier, was applied to two problems of representation theory and mathematical physics. 1) We derived a criterion for convergence of normalized Jack polynomials as the number of variables goes to infinity; this yields, in particular, a classification of spherical functions on classical infinite dimensional symmetric spaces of type A. 2) We calculated n-point correlation functions for the so-called log-gas at rational values of temperature. The study of multidimensional interpolation polynomials was continued and a characterization of interpolation Macdonald polynomials was found.

An important projective representation of the Lie algebra of differential operators on the circle (the wedge representation) was studied; certain related generating functions, which are similar to correlation functions, were calculated.

The stable structure of certain centralize subalegebras in universal enveloping algebras of the classical series was studied; a connection with the twisted Yangians was discovered.

We studied the property of strong completeness (compactness) for modal and intermediate propositional logics in topological semantics. We continued the investigation of the products of modal logics and proves results on axiomatizability, finite model property and decidability for many of them.

The Hausdorf dimension of limiting points of isotropic and homogeneous branching random walks on Hyperbolic spaces is studied. As in the two-dimensional case a set of values of the Hausdorf dimension for the investigated sets is disconnected for any dimension of Hyperbolic spaces.

LABORATORY 5

Laboratory of methods for performance evaluation of telecommunication networks

Chief of the laboratory - Dr.Sci.(Technology) S.Stepanov

Tel. (095) 299 9415

Among scientific leaders of laboratory there are:

Dr.Sci.(Math.) I.Citovich Dr.Sci.(Technology) S.Stepanov
Dr.Sci.(Technology) A.Kharkevich Dr. E.Shkolniy

Directions of activity:

The laboratory deals with the development of teletraffic theory and its applications in telecommunications and computer systems. The following problem areas and models have been studied at the laboratory in 1997.

Problem Areas:

MAIN RESULTS

1. For the model that is operated as a full availability system with a large number of Poisson input processes each having its own availability with three reasons for unsuccessful call retrials (no available bandwidth, called subscriber busy, or no answer) an approximate algorithm is derived for determination of all stationary performance measures. It is shown that the realization of the proposed method makes the problem of estimation the system's performance measures equivalent to finding the performance measures of the considered system but without retrials. This problem can be effectively solved by the convolution algorithm combined with truncation of the state space. The presented algorithm can be generalized to the case of a state-dependent and multi-slot Poisson traffic processes. (S.N.Stepanov, E.O.Naumova)

2. For the model of ideal grading the optimized algorithm for calculation of main performance measures is derived based on preliminary estimation and ignoring in the process of solution the system of states equations the states with negligently small probabilities. The usage of suggested approach for large cases allows to decrease amount of calculation up to ten times and overcome overflow and underflow problems (S.N.Stepanov, M.Yu.Zozulinskiy)

3. In the problem of search for a limited number of distinguished elements of a large population an algorithm of search for a subset of distinguished elements is proposed. Under the uniform distribution its mean error probability and mean duration is estimated together with asymptotic as a number of elements of the population tends to infinity and a number of distinguished elements is fixed. The suboptimal asymptotic rate of search is found under arbitrary independent possibly continuously supported noise and slowly decreasing a mean error probability. (I.I.Tsitovich).

4. An asymptotically optimal sequential strategy for discrimination between two statistical model is found for non-parametric setting. Asymptotically optimal robust test for sequential testing homogeneity of distributions is proposed. (I.I.Tsitovich).

5.The analysis of conception of development the intelligent network is done when intelligent network is developed independently of existing regional network. Suggested approach is based on the modern state of telecommunication networks for whom the necessity of performing functions of intelligent networks is desired. (A.D.Charkevich).

6. An algorithm of routing in hypercube interconnection networks with fault nodes is presented. Algorithm is based on the dividing hypercube on subcubes with faulted nodes and routing on alternate routs. (V.A.Garmash)

7.The method of making of the Laplace's transformation domain models for wide class of the linear inertial dependent voltage and current sources with nonzero initial entrance current or voltage has been developed. The examples of calculation of the characteristics of the simplest radiotechnical devices were considered.(A.A.Vitkova)

Directions of activity:

MAIN RESULTS

On the basis of electrodynamics of stationary currents, the electric and magnetic fields of model bioelectric generators with a concentrated (dipole-like) and distributed (in the form of uniform double layer) structure are investigated on the assumption that the generator is localized in a homogeneous anisotropic conducting medium modeling a macroscopic region of the myocardial tissue. As a result, a quantitative estimate of the effect of the myocardium anisotropy on the extracellular fields is obtained. In particular, analytical expressions are derived for calculation of the electric potential and magnetic induction in an anisotropic medium outside the generator in the form of closed uniform double layer (in commonly used models with isotropic medium, such a generator does not set up external fields at all).

For the ⌠economic■ lead system NEL-26 proposed formerly, analytical expressions for calculating the multipole components of the cardiogenerator of the three lower orders (the components of dipole, quadrupole, and octupole) are obtained on the basis of the symmetry properties of the electric fields of multipoles. It is shown that the use of statistically averaged values of the basic anthropometric parameters (diameters of the ⌠realistic■ chest etc.) provides a sufficient accuracy of the noninvasive mapping of the quasiepicardium potential for practical systems of computerized electrocardiographic diagnosis.

A new characteristic, namely, the moving electric center of the heart is proposed. The coordinates of this point indicate the situation of local electrophysiological events in the heart. As a result, the accuracy of topical diagnosis of pathological states which are difficult to recognize by conventional methods can be improved.

In cooperation with the Cardiology Research Complex (Moscow) and the State Research Center for Preventive Medicine (Moscow), experimental-clinical testing of the developed methods was carried out on complicated cases of cardiac hypertrophy which are not amenable to the identification by the standard electrocardiogram. The results of these experiments show that the new methods significantly improve the quality of diagnosis. Particularly, the dipole electrocardiotopography (DECARTO) technique provides rather reliable differentiation between the hypertrophy and dilatation of the right ventricle, between the inferior myocardial infarction scars and local hypertrophy of the left ventricle, as well as between other pathological states which commonly are not distinguishable by standard criteria.

The main scientific results were presented by L.I.Titomir at the International conference ⌠Measurement▓97■ (Smolenice near Bratislava, Slovakia, May 29-31, 1997), the 24th International Congress on Electrocardiology (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 24-28, 1997), and the International conference ⌠Noninvasive Functional Source Imaging 1997■ (Graz, Austria, Sept. 25-28, 1997). The computer program complex ⌠DECARTO■ for electrocadiographic diagnosis was demonstrated by Dr. E.A.-I.Aidu at the International Exhibition ⌠Hannover Messe■ (Hannover, Germany, Apr. 13-21, 1997).

Group of Artificial Intelligence Systems

Directions of activity:

MAIN RESULTS

The methods and tools for discrete (finite automata) models of locally organized systems are systematically studied. Two new methods for approximate and precise analyses are proposed.

Our theory-of-category approach to the interacting agent description, where each agent is represented by its categorical production net, has been further developed. A category was built which allows fuzzy knowledge. Its properties are partially studied.

By the study of the problem of ontology building and application certain reasons are found for consideration of so called conceptual knowledge bases, which are to replace in applications the common ontologies.

It is shown that on the bases of paradigmatic and associative intralingua relations a set of special tools exists in Russian language, which supports the 2nd level semantic layer. These tools are local in their character. The concrete mechanisms that are used in these tools on the phonetic, lexical, syntactical, stylistic, and text levels are described.

Our intellectual interface design has been further developed. It was shown that the agent interaction within the frames of such a locally organized interface allows flexible tuning to the current user state in various applications and provides the user with an intellectual support.

The main scientific results were presented by V.L.Stefanuk at the Workshop ⌠Embedding User Models in Intelligent Applications■, during 6th International Conference on User Modeling UM97 (Chia Laguna, Sardinia, Italy, June 1-8, 1997), at the Working Meeting of the European program ⌠Kopernicus■ (Patras, Greece, March 26 - April 3, 1997), at the two lectures read in Osaka University (Japan), and a lecture in Aizu-Wokomotsa University (Japan).

Directions of activity:

In 1997 the laboratory continued to study the wide range of problems of information processing in different levels of sensory systems: visual and acoustical. Neurophysiological studies involve: photoreceptors (their spectral properties), retinal mechanisms of signal processing: chemical synaptic transmission, electrical coupling of photoreceptors and of horizontal cells, electrical feedback mechanism from horizontal cells to photoreceptors, properties of bipolar cells and ganglion cells. Also the neurons in different brain centers were investigated in cats and monkeys. The functions of visual system as a whole were studied psychophysically (multiple organization of binocular visual mechanisms, constancy of colour vision etc), as well as in behavioural experiments with animals. Computer modelling was applied to analyze the properties of retinal networks and image processing. The auditory system of insects was studied in two aspects: characteristics of cercal mechano-acoustic system in cricket and the echolocation in nocturnal moth. The echolocation studies include both the mechanism of sound pulse emission and perception of sounds reflected (echo) from the objects. Diagnostic methods and equipments were developed to test the visual system in ophthalmology.

MAIN RESULTS

Neurophysiology and modeling of signal processing in the retina

In the work with Yugoslavian colleges, the physiological properties of different neurons in the Adriatic eel retina were studied in details. The results were compared with the eels from Seliger sea where the eels were introduced in 80th. The differences found can probably be connected with the absence of natural exit of Seliger sea to Atlantic, resulting in the delay of sexual maturation and related morphological and physiological characteristics (A.L.Bysov, I.Damjanovich, P.Michkovich, R.Andjus). It is shown in the model of photoreceptor syncytium, that electrical couplings between photoreceptors favor the detection of extended boundaries between areas of different brightness (D.S.Lebedev, A.L.Byzov). The quantitative model of signal processing in the outer synaptic layer is developed. The model is able to reproduce the mechanism of "correction to illumination" in color - opponent neurons in fish retina. Unlike our previous models, the new one reproduces the responses in dynamics (V.V.Maximov, E.M.Maximova, A.L.Byzov). The model of the retina is produced with on- and off-bipolar cells and the dynamically developing receptive fields. The model was checked experimentally (D.S.Lebedev, K.V.Safonov).

Binocular Vision

In the case of monocularly recognizable test objects, perceived direction to the object depends on interocular contrast ratio. But in the case of purely binocular (cyclopeans) test objects (coded by random-dot stereograms) such a dependence was absent. The repeated presentation of one and the same cyclopean test object makes it monocularly recognizable, due to pattern memorization, and accordingly the perceived direction becomes contrast dependent. As a result, a new concept of "cyclopean eye" and a new rule for calculation of perceived direction are suggested (G.I.Rozhkova, P.P.Nikolaev, A.K.Panjutin).

Echolocation in nocturnal moth

It is shown that stimulation of moth by artificial acoustic pulses imitating the natural echo from their own pulses, evokes the increase in frequency of own pulse generation. This fact not only proves the ability of moth to echolocation, but also favours more precise estimation of the parameters of echolocatory system (D.N.Lapshin, D.D.Voronzov).

Acoustic communicatory signals in grasshoppers

In frame of INTAS grant (94-2854) performed together with Germany colleges, the calling songs were recorded and analyzed in 21 grasshopper species of Ukraina and Moldova (V.Yu.Vedenina).

Colour vision in amphybia

It is shown in behavioural experiments, that the perception of stimulus colour by green toads strongly depends on the food motivation: the hungry animals prefer only red objects as the prey, whereas the satisfied toads start to choose also blue objects (V.A.Bastakov, I.A.Falzman, O.Yu.Orlov).

Ophthalmology

By means of computerized tests it has been found that in auditory handicapped children of 6-9 year the average indexes of stereovision are significantly lower than in control children without auditory anomalies. It has been shown also in pre-school and junger school children that the differences in visual performance between children with and without binocular anomalies increase after the first school year indicating that binocular anomalies create specific difficulties at the beginning of school learning (G.I.Rozhkova, T.A.Podugolnikova). The diagnostic devices CHIASMA-1 and CHIASMA-2 were constructed that received a good rating among ophthalmologists and were repeatedly marked in Russian and international exhibitions (4 gold medals in Brussels exhibition 1997) (K.V.Golubtzov, O.Yu.Orlov).

LABORATORY 9

Laboratory of Neurobiology of Motor Control

Head of the laboratory - Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, Dr.Sci.(Medicine), Prof. Victor Gurfinkel

Dr.Sci. (Medicine), Prof. Victor Gurfinkel Dr. M. Lipshits
Dr. A.Grishin Dr. K.Popov
Dr. Yu.Ivanenko Dr. B.Smetanin
Dr. Yu.Levik

Directions of activity:

Laboratory of neurobiology of motor control investigates the mechanisms of control of posture and movements for more then 25 years. At present time the efforts are focused at study of system of internal representation and its role in motor control and at the investigations of reference systems used by brain for organization of motor behavior. During last years it was shown that in situations with discrepancy between real and perceived position of body segments many motor reactions such as vestibulo-motor and neck influences on leg muscles or oculomotor reactions are determined not by real body configuration but by its description in the system of the internal representation.

In the activity of laboratory the studies of neural mechanisms of locomotion in cat traditionally took an important place (Dr. M.Shik with collaborators). Now we begin to study stepping automatisms in humans.

Manned spaceflights open a possibility for studying how the human central nervous system adapts to the microgravity, to what extent the gravitation is essential for processing of proprioceptive information and for motor control. A series of joint research projects with France was accomplished in this direction during 1982-1997 under conditions of real spaceflights.

MAIN RESULTS

In 1997 we studied the role of reference system in the interpretation of proprioceptive signals arising during trunk rotation relative to space-fixed arm. In was shown that under such conditions the change of shoulder joint angle was perceived as an illusory arm rotation relative to stationary trunk. Hence, CNS interpreted the signals of proprioceptors of muscles of shoulder joint in the reference system connected with a trunk (body-centered reference system). The contact with immovable external object (grasping of a rigid handle, pressing a foot against a floor) evoked a change from sensation of arm movement to a sensation of trunk movement, i.e. a transition to allocentric reference system. When a subject interpreted the changes of joint angle as a result of trunk rotation he evaluated its amplitude as smaller, than in situation where the joint movements of equal amplitude were perceived as arm rotation. Thus, it is shown that the same proprioceptive signals could evoke different kinesthetic sensations, and that interpretation mechanisms determining the type of these sensation are closely connected with a choice of reference system.

The studies of locomotory automatisms in healthy humans (supported by PECO grant) were continued. Involuntary ⌠air-stepping■ of one or two legs was evoked by vibratory stimulation of muscle afferents. Continuous muscle vibration evoked stepping movements, that did not differ by their kinematics and EMG patterns from voluntary stepping performed by subjects under the same conditions. When two legs were suspended, their movements alternated. The phase shift between changes of hip and knee angles corresponded to leg movement during forward or backward locomotion. During continuous vibration with fixed parameters a spontaneous changes of movements ⌠direction■ could be sometimes observed. Additional afferent signals elicited by a pressure applied to the sole of the foot could facilitate initiation and maintenance of the air-stepping evoked by vibration. Results obtained permit to assume that in man also exist stepping automatisms which could be activated by afferent influences increasing the level of tonic readiness.

In other study the equilibrium maintenance at unstable supports (seesaw) of different radii and heights was investigated. It was shown that despite the fact that both at the seesaw and at rigid floor the equilibrium maintenance is ensured mostly by movements in ankle joints, real patterns of regulation differ considerably. Thus, so called ⌠ankle strategy■ proves to be only one particular solution of the main task of postural regulation - the stabilization of trunk position.

The laboratory participated in the preparing and realization of the ⌠Altair■ and ⌠Cassiopeia■ projects, investigating the influence of weightlessness on higher levels of sensory-motor integration. It was shown that microgravity did not considerably modified such processes as mental rotation of 3D-objects, mental tracking of moving points. However, were revealed the changes in perception of object form, the decrease of the accuracy of positioning of handle with force feedback. Were observed also the changes in the perception of time intervals. Results obtained create a basis for studying the operator activity of the cosmonauts. The studies in this direction are necessary because in the work of the crew members of long-term orbital stations the important place will belong to remote control of equipment and tools located at the surface of station and at mobile space objects and intended for carrying out various technological operations.

The laboratory developed some new methods of quantitative evaluation of the state of skeleto-motor apparatus by measuring contractile properties of skeletal muscles, cervico-tonic reflexes, the level of the tone of axial muscles. At present these methods are used for evaluation of the results of neuro-transplantation in parkinsonic patients. The work is conducted in collaboration with the N.N.Burdenko Institute of Neurosurgery.

In 1997 the laboratory actively participated in preparation and carrying out of International Symposium ⌠Brain and Movement■ (Moscow-St.Petersburg, 6-10 of July). The Symposium was devoted to the 100th anniversary of N.A.Bernstein and timed to the 33rd Congress of IUPS. Dr.Sci. (Medicine), Prof. Victor Gurfinkel was the chairman of the Organizing Committee.

MAIN RESULTS

Recent studies of high-quality, high-resolution traffic measurements have revealed a new phenomenon with potentially important ramifications to the modeling, design and control of broadband networks. These include an analysis of hundreds of millions of observed packets on several Ethernet LAN's at the Bellcore Morristown Research and Engineering Center and an analysis of a few millions of observed frame data by variable-bit-rate video services. In these studies, packet traffic appears to be statistically SELF-SIMILAR (fractal). Self-similar traffic is characterized by burstiness across an extremely wide range of time scales: traffic spikes ride on longer-tern ripples, that in turn ride on still longer term swells etc.

In research by B.Tsybakov and Prof. N.D.Georganas (Canada), first, it is done some definitions and clarifications regarding second-order self-similar process and it is shown that some previous definitions contain some redundancy. It is considered a large class of asymptotically second-order self-similar processes, to model input in an ATM queue. It is found a lower bound to the buffer overflow and loss probabilities in a finite ATM buffer. It is proved that this probabilities cannot decrease faster than hyperbolically with the buffer size, in contrast to the one in traditional Markov models that decreases exponentially (Kingman bound). These models and bounds have immediate practical application in the dimensioning of buffers in ATM multiplexers and switches.

Dr. A.V.Kuznetsov presented a systematic way to construct multilevel concatenated modulation codes for the high density magnetic and optical recording channels described by their partial response models. It is based on matched partitions of output sets corresponding to the different states of the channel, and suitable for the multistage suboptimal decoding of the read signal which could combine Viterbi detection with side information on the trellis of the PR channel and algebraic error correction of the component block or convolutional codes.

N.D.Vvedenskaya continued to work on asymptotic properties of large queuing Systems. The mean-field Approximation in used. For example, a queuing system is considered, with a large number N of identical infinite-buffer FCFS single servers. The system is fed by a Poisson flow of rate rN, with i.i.d. service times, under the non-overload condition Es<1,where Es is the expected service time. Each arriving task joins a server (or servers)by selecting it (them)from an independently (and ⌠completely randomly■) chosen collection of m<N servers, on the basis of some fixed dynamic routing policy. A simple example is where the service-time is exponential, and the task selects, among the randomly chosen m servers, the one with the lowest queue. We discuss various properties of such a system as N tends to infinity. In particular, a natural limiting random process describing statistical properties of the system turns out to be deterministic and following a solution of an initial-boundary value problem for a specific functional difference or differential equation. The fixed point of this problem is determined by the dynamic routing policy and corresponds to the limiting time-invariant regime in the system. It is interesting to compare them with each other and with the purely random policy that corresponds to an isolated M/GI/1 server with the Poisson arrival rate r. For example, in the above case, the invariant queue size distribution has a super-exponentially decreasing tail, in contrast with the exponential for the M/M/1 queue in isolation. A clutter approach to the reliability theory of random binary systems was considered by Polesskii. He suggested clutter untying transformations. It was shown the transformations generate a class of new bounds of the reliability and they are better than the classical Esary-Proschan bounds. One such bound in terms of the clutter and its antiblocking set was considered.

Levshin I.P., Orlov I.A. developed the new algorithm and the computer simulation of the optimal communications system for the underwater acoustics channel information transmission. This algorithm is based on the modifications of the algorithm of the relative receiver. The new algorithm is able to increase the noiseproof by extend base of the signals by increase of the time duration of the signals for the frequency-time changeability of the transfer function of the underwater acoustics channel.

Directions of activity:

The general theme of the scientific work in the laboratory is: analysis of the information processes in cellular systems and in motor control. The main directions of theoretical researches in this realm: developmental biology (analysis of principles for the realization of genetic information in the developmental systems), neurobiology (neural communication and biochemical modulation in neural centers), motor control (study of geometry of manipulative space and of control goal-directed movings). Also some new bioinformatical principles are worked out.

MAIN RESULTS

Developmental Biology

The specificity of gap junction's (GJ) channels in cell differentiation period in fishe is investigated with respect to cellular gene activity. The comparison of efficiency of transfer through GJ for negative (lucifer and fluorescein) and positive (DAPE) charged dyes have shown that the GJs which are formed in the forming mesoderm acquire more high penetrability for first two dyes and, inversely, become impenetrable for last one in the most part of the germ ring excluding its dorsal side. These data support the hypothesis that the different gap junction channels may be used for transmission of different inducing factors. (V.Bozkhova, D.Voronov, N.Rosanova.)

The cell lineage and intercellular communications in embryonic development of marine nematodes was studied using some experimental approaches (the intercellular labeling by fluorescent tracers and horse-radish peroxidase, the dye coupling test, the electrophysiological methods). (Voronov D.A., Panchin Yu.V.)

The electrophysiological study is carried out of membrane fusion in time of the junction formation and widening. The modifications of the known methods were introduced which permit correct the cell-pipette (source) admittance for distortions produced by electrophysiological equipment. An algorithm for calculation of fusion pore conductance despite a concurrent change in the resistance of the clamped membrane was worked out. The sensitivity of the capacitance restoration algorithm (Lindau, 1991) to phase shift errors was analyzed, and experimental data were used to demonstrate the results of this analysis. (Plonsky I.M. with V. Ratinov and J.Zimmerberg, Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biophysics, National Institute of Health, USA).

Neurobiology

Stabilization of the body orientation is the main function of the postural nervous mechanisms. Basic principles of postural control were studied on a simpler "animal model" - the marine mollusc Clione. Driven by the gravity sensory organs (statocyst), the neural network produces postural corrections by eliciting tail flexions. To study the activity of the network, a novel method has been developed. In vitro preparation consisted of the central nervous system isolated with the statocyst was used. The output signals of the network were used to drive an electrical motor rotating the preparation in space. When this artificial feedback was closed, the network stabilized the preparation orientation. Detailed analysis of the activity of individual neurons involved in the postural stabilization was carried out with opened and closed feedback. (Arshavsky Y.I.)

The main neurotransmitters of the moto- and interneurons in the locomotor rhythmic generator of the marine mollusk Clione were identified. It is possible now to block selectively different synapses in this system and to investigate its performance in different configurations. In a different set of experiments it was shown that selective formation of regenerating synapses depends on the choice between correct and incorrect targets. When the choice is present only correct connections are formed. When the choice is absent incorrect connections may form. (Panchin Yu.V.)

The localization of the medulla respiratory nuclei is described in newborn mice (2-10 days). The arborization of dendrites of the respiratory neurons and sprouting of the fibers into nuclei completes at age of 7-8 days. At that time the neurons of the respiratory nuclei ceases the spontaneous burst activity. (Keder-Stepanova I.A.)

Nitric oxide (NO) is a small highly reactive radical. The influence of different NO concentrations (10 microM, 1 mM, 5 mM) on the cerebellum molecular layer was studied. NO injured membranes of neuronal net elements such as glial cells, parallel fibers, synapses of parallel fibers on Purkinje cells and synaptic vesicles (changing their shape, size, localization) inducing decrease of informatic characteristics of all cerebellum neural network. (Samosudova N.V., Larionova N.P.)

Correlative study of behavior reactions and ventilator activity is carried out with non-invasive methods in high invertebrate crustaces Procanbarus cubensis. (Burmistrov Yu.M. with Shuranova Z.P.)

The experiments was continued on action mechanism of some analgesics of narcotic type and also of dioxin-like preparations on parameters of end-plate potentials in frogs and on bi-layer membrane conductance (at Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics Institute RAS, Pushchino). The influence of the studied medicinal preparations and toxins is being investigated on the oxydative phosphorilation in mitochondria and on the conductance of artificial membrane. (Z.H-M.Khashaev with collaborators from the TEBI RAS, Pushchino.)

Motor Control

Mechanisms of human many-join moving control have been analyzing including comparison of neurologic healthy and with motor disturbances subjects. (This work was carried out at Ratgers University, New Jersey USA.) In particular the hypothesis was testing that the specific parkinsonian disturbances may be revealed when for the accomplishment of the movement the afferent integration of different modalities (visual, kinesthetic) is necessary. Disturbances have been observed in accuracy of pointing movements and in their motor kinematics under condition that the patient has not seen his arm. It is supposed that the basal ganglia may have an important role in integration of the proprioceptive information with the visual goals. The parkinsonics show more significant variability of time coordination for integration of aim-directed movement of arm with body forward incline. A hypothesis was tested with prof. A.G.Feldman and M.Levine (Montreal University, Canada) that an arm-body synergy exists which compensate the influence of body movement on the arm position in space. The accidental stoppages of body movement were used produced with help of powerful electromagnet. The data obtained show that the beginning of the compensatory synergy is not centrally controlled, but is with proprioceptive signals or/and with vestibular signals. (Berkinblit M.B., Adamovich S.A. with collaborators from Ratgers and Montreal University.)

A geometric model of the trajectory planning for a many-join limb movement is built. (Chernavsky A.V., Karpushkin V.N.)

A study is carried out in a collaboration with Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of Poland AS concerning the difference in motoneuron rhythmic for slow and fast muscles. A conclusion is deduced about role of trace de- and hyperpolarisation in correspondent muscles control. With aim to investigate the motoneuron properties (trace potentials) in rhythmic firing control the main characteristics of motoneuron rhythmic was analyzed for slow and fast muscles. It is shown that the motoneurons of the slow muscle make a homogeneous group, but one can distinguish two groups in the motoneuron pool of a fast muscle. The result gives evidence for a control function of trace hyperpolarisation in slow and fast motoneurons and trace depolarization in firing of fast motoneurons. (Kudina L.P., Zukovskaya N.M. with prof. Petrkievich I.M. and Hausmanova-Petrusievich.)

Principles of Bioinformatics

The acquisition of knowledge is the most important and difficult process of intellectual system developing. It includes the extraction of information and its structural organization. This common problem solved in the area of knowledge concerning human brain investigation: lectroencephalography (EEG), neuropsychology and neurology. These fields of neuroscience due to their diagnostic significance seemed to be useful for elaboration of one of the main questions of informational theory - the minimization in the number of possible combinations of the object features. This question together with other problems of artificial intellect (acquisition and organization of expert knowledge, developing of data bases and systems of decision making support, professional training), can be solved by knowledge and information structuring.

Structuring of knowledge in the field of visual analysis of the EEG enabled us to create an automated computer system of data description and analysis for evaluating the functional state of the brain cortex and subcortical regulatory structures - "EEG-EXPERT". (Lukashevich I.P. with Machinskaya R.I., Inst. of age physiology, and Fishman M.N., Federal center of speech pathology and neuroreabilitation.)

A theoretical analysis is carried out of conditions and possibilities to the appearance of high level behavior integrity which is based on the emergence of the individual animal memory. (Chaylakhyan L.M.)

A method of computer graphics is worked out concerning analysis of the heart rhythmic activity. (Rakcheeva T.A.)

A set of computerized psychophysiological tests is prepared. (Rakcheeva T.A. with V.V.Smolianinov, IMASH RAS)

It is proposed that the controlling system of the nerve cell is a molecular quantum device with an inner point of view. For such system description it is necessary to create new science. Four principles are the basis of foundation of the science consolidating physics, mathematics and biology: the principle of minimal price of action for measurement and calculation; the principle of optimality; the principle of minimal irreversibility, and the principle of causality in new wording. MAIN RESULTS

A vision model for extracting colors and shape invariant under light sources change from a picture of 3D scene with textured objects is considered. Some restrictions of the shape, colors, light sources and imaging methods are found that guarantee the uniqueness of the solution. Algorithms that combine the procedures of spatial and color synthesis with symmetry and regularity considerations are constructed.

A new version of pyramidal algorithm for setting a pointwise correspondence between images was built. It provides construction of disparity field along smooth curves with intersections and self-intersections. Detecting places of likeness and difference, the algorithm produces segmentation of images, what is used in stereosynthesis for detecting occlusions (i.e. the cases when an object is hidden by another object) as well as in the process of forming visual concepts.

An initial version of parallel-sequential procedure is built for analysis, recognition and structural representation of visual scenes.

A conception of iterative procedure for forming concepts (in particular, visual) is developed, which is based on the usage of associative memory and on the continuous observation of the current situation within the behavioral process. On the base of this concept we have built an initial version of autonomous learning system which gradually learns the laws of the world and then uses them for generating a goal-directed behavior. A billiards-like game was used as a model of the world.

A mechanism that controls the load of a network that is stable in overload conditions and works on-line is developed.

An approach to find an isomorphism between two structures is found using some finite parts of these structures. This approach uses semantical evaluations and leads to (probabilistic) algorithms that can be used to perform associative search in the behavior planning problems.

Asymptotically tight methods for testing hypotheses for Sobolev and Holder classes are found, assuming that the distance between a null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis is measured either at a fixed point or in uniform distance. For the problem of estimating analytic functions in Lp (for any p>1) asymptotically tight constants and effective minimax estimates are found. An asymptotically tight (in the minimax sense) adaptive bound is found for the uniform distance for the signals that belong to Sobolev's class.

A semilattice of finite objects (binary strings) with respect to ordering defined in terms of Kolmogorov complexity is considered. The connection between the existence of a greatest lower bound and the existence of common information is found. Some cases where common information does not exist (completely or partially) are considered.

Laboratory of Problems of Consciousness and Communication

Chief of the laboratory - Dr.Sci.(Psychology) Nikolai Muskhelishvili

Among scientific leaders of the laboratory there are:

Dr.Sci.(Psychology) N.Muskhelishvili Dr. A.Kiselev
Dr.Sci. (Philosophy), Prof. J.Schreider

Directions of activity:

Direction of research is concerned with specific characteristics of communications connected with the alterations of human consciousness states. This activity is based on the metapsychological approach proposed by leading scientists of Laboratory for describing the phenomena of consciousness and indirect communications.

MAIN RESULTS

As the principal for arising of understanding in a communication act we propose the ability of the receiver to translate the text he has to understand into his inner speech (autocommu-nication). This autocommunication must be generated in his consciousness as the creative response to the organising image of the original text he is reconstructing. It is shown that the understanding of the message is closely connected with the fascination or the attractiveness proper to the text of the message. It is the fascination that starts the imagination of the receiver, helping him not only to reconstruct the original image, but also to generate new texts within his inner speech, that are used in later communication. Thus in the artificial intellect problems the model of the original meaning as a germ-image, foundation of the first text generation, requests not only well-developed means of formalised information theory, but also means of text organisation, having the necessary fascination, assuring the necessary indirect communication in the system ⌠man-machine■ for the occasion when the receiver has to reconstruct creatively the information he got.

Dr. Leonid L.Iomdin

Directions of activity:

The principal problem area of the Laboratory is the functioning of the natural language as a means of information transmission.

The basic research activities pursued in the laboratory aim at the development of a fully operational formal linguistic model of the Meaning U Text class. This model simulates the linguistic behavior of man, in particular, the ability to produce texts in a natural language and to understand them.

MAIN RESULTS

In 1997, the following scientific results were achieved.

1. The first issue of the ⌠New explanatory dictionary of synonyms of the Russian language", compiled under the guidance of Prof. Apresjan, has been published. It is an innovative dictionary based on three underlying principles: active character, integrity, and systematism. The first principle proclaims the orientation of the linguistic description to the speaker, rather than to the hearer. The second principle requires a complete agreement of the two main constituents of the linguistic description, the dictionary and the grammar. The third principle states that the vocabulary must be treated as a system, i.e. as a set of classes of lexical entries that share common properties. The orientation to a systemic description of words belonging to one and the same lexicographic type is supplemented by the fact that individual peculiarities of each word are portrayed to the minute detail.

The dictionary offers a much larger volume of data on the synonyms of the words. These data cover all aspects of the word▓s functioning, behavior, including the morphology, syntax, semantics, combinatorics, prosody, and the communicative behavior. The first issue of the dictionary contains 132 synonymic rows that cover, primarily, anthropocentric word classes.

2. The first work package of an international research project, Universal Networking Language (UNL), which is carried out under the aegis of the United Nations, has been finished. The ultimate goal of the project is to overcome the language barrier in the Internet by providing Internet users from different countries with a means to communicate with each other in their native language. The main idea of the project is as follows. UNL is a general purpose interlingua developed by the United Nations University and intended for information exchange and retrieval in computer networks. It is assumed that UNL is strong enough to allow a representation of the meaning of any text written in any natural language. For every natural language, two procedures must be elaborated: the conversion procedure that translates a text in a given language into a UNL text, and the reverse procedure of de-conversion that translates a UNL text into a text in the chosen natural language. For each natural language, both procedures are made available through the Internet to any potential user. The laboratory▓s contribution to the project is the creation of the two procedures for Russian, the idea being that they are implemented as an additional module of the ETAP-3 MT/NLP system.

3. The Lexical Functions module of the ETAP-3 system, which ensures a much better flexibility of meaning representation has been drastically expanded. The present-day Lexical Functions module processes idiomatic expressions, which present great difficulties for translation, with the help of very general rules valid for a wide range of lexical units. These rules, which handle the information on the presence in the text to be translated of arguments of the lexical functions and their values, are applied at a few strictly defined points of the machine translation algorithm. The instrument of lexical functions has proven to be very convenient for the representation of lexicalized (bound) word combinations in combinatorial dictionary entries. Since the set of lexical functions for all natural languages is, for the most part, one and the same, the information on lexical functions provides a natural possibility of translating bound lexical combinations between languages. The apparatus of lexical functions is not restricted to a specific language pair. If a new language is added into the system, it is sufficient to provide the relevant information on lexical functions in the dictionary of this language, while the dictionaries compiled earlier require no changes. The information on lexical functions may be applied, in addition to the machine translation task proper, to other natural language processing paradigms, in particular, to the task of intralinguistic paraphrasing. No other existing machine translation systems, except for ETAP-3, make use of linguistic functions on a sufficiently large scale.

4. A new methodology of compiling multilingual explanatory and translation subject domain dictionaries has been elaborated. A general scheme of terminology description in the dictionary has been suggested, which is intended for use by a professional translator.

More often than not, professional translators are no specialists in a narrow subject area, so they cannot be expected to have an active command of the subject domain terminology in either their native language or the language they translate to or from. At the same time, a professional translator▓s general command of a foreign language is assumed to be sufficiently good. Accordingly, the terminological dictionary intended for such a user must be active, i.e. it must explain the usage rules of terminological units. The emphasis must be laid upon the description of the semantics, style, and pragmatics of lexical units.

Traditionally, dictionaries are built from the expression to the concept. A dictionary entry is a terminological unit, for which one or several definitions are offered. The new dictionary is based on the reverse approach: from the concept to the expression. A dictionary entry is formed by a concept, for which different ways of expression in the languages concerned are given. Beside the definition of the concept and the translation equivalent(s) proper, the concept description includes information on the term▓s functioning in the language: stylistic and pragmatic labels, thesaurus links, the so-called ⌠false friends of a translator■, references and other relevant data. This helps create a sufficiently full reflection of the place taken by a given term in the terminological system, which provides the translator with a powerful instrument of correct selection of the equivalent.

A number of pilot subject domain dictionaries have been compiled using the new explanatory-translational approach: a telecommunications dictionary, a dictionary of economy and management, and an ecological dictionary. A list of entries and the general concept of a linguistics dictionary has been elaborated.

5. The integral learning Russian and English dictionaries, started earlier, have been developed and substantially revised. They are used as basis for a computer-assisted language learning system, which resorts to a variety of linguistic games. The total number of lexical units, which represent all principal semantic classes, is about 1,500. Each dictionary entry contains the following types of data: (a) name of the lexeme; (b) analytical definition; (c) part of speech attribution; (d) translation into the other working language; (e) semantic class attribution, i.e. indication of the place of the lexeme in the hierarchical ideographic classification of the vocabulary; (f) subcategorization properties; (g) values of the major lexical functions available for the lexeme.

This information is used in the following language games: (1) guess the word from a given definition; (2) give the word▓s translation; (3) list the ways of expression of the syntactic valencies of the word (i.e. indicate its government pattern); 4) find the values of a word▓s lexical functions; 5) find the values of a word▓s lexical functions using prompts (answer samples in the other language, which is assumed to be the learner▓s mother tongue); 6) understand the meaning and calculate the value of a complex lexical function when the constituent simple lexical functions are known; 7) guess the word from the values of its lexical functions (its ⌠lexical world■); 8) indicate the values of a given lexical function (e.g. MAGN) for different argument words.

MAIN RESULTS

New results on averaging, convergence rate, mixing for stochastic systems are obtained, in particular, for discrete time processes.

Large deviation principle is established for SDE's with two small parameters and several noises. (A.Yu.Veretennikov)

The problem of an optimal control of a desynchronized system via observation moments is solved with the use of spectral characteristics of the shift matrix. (F.N.Grigor'ev)

The logarithmic asymptotics is found for large and moderate deviations of heavy traffic service systems and polling type systems. A representation of the rate function is given. (A.A.Pukhalskii)

An asymptotic behavior of a solution of Cauchy problem for a parabolic PDE is established provided its coefficients depend on a fast oscillating diffusion. LLN and CLT are proved. An approximation is found for optimal filtering estimates if a signal and a noise are diffusions and their drifts depend on a fast oscillating perturbation. (A.P.Serebrovskii)

Directions of activity:

The major directions of the Laboratory's activities are as follows: the development of theoretical basis for analysis and synthesis of the distributed information computer networks and their practical implementation in the framework of large-scale projects.

The theoretical research is carried on in the following directions:

MAIN RESULTS

The topology synthesis of corporate data transmission networks is considered to be one of the most significant and labor-consuming tasks of the networks design. The topological design errors result in significant economic losses due to dearness of long-distance and international data transmission channels. In this connection the development of precise methods of topology optimization is regarded as the major research direction in the theory of the computer information networks design.

The general goal of research in the field of distributed information computer networks is to develop adequate models ensuring optimal design solutions at the pre-design stages of research (selection of optimal architecture, network protocols parameters, etc.), stages of development and operation of systems as a whole.

To develop such tools, the fundamental research in the fields of extreme graphs theory and queuing networks theory are vital. Moreover, the field experiments with various physical media (fiber-optical, radio, satellite communications), operational environments and various network architecture have to be carried on simultaneously.

In 1997 the Laboratory obtained the following fundamental results:

Theoretical results in the field of the analysis and synthesis of the distributed computer information networks serve as a basis for development of the large-scale projects, including the following:

SCIENTIFIC-ORGANIZATION DEPARTMENT

Chief of Department - Dr.Sci.(Math.) Vladimir Venets

Tel.: (095) 299 5491

Among the leading researchers of the department there are:

Dr.Sci.(Techn.) M.Soloviev Dr.Sci.(Math.) V.Venets

Directions of activity:

Group for Municipal Management Informatics

(leader - Prof. M.Soloviev)

In 1997 the following results have been obtained:

It was elaborated (together with the City of Korolev Corporation ⌠Progress■ and German firms ⌠Systema■ and ⌠Zenner■) a conception of the Municipal Information System [MIS] for communal energy measuring and accounting. Also the conception included ways for the MIS installation through different mechanisms of joint ventures. It was showed that the MIS▓ properties lead to the real energy and municipal budget economy. A start measurement complex (installed by the ⌠Progress■ for group of municipal bodies of the City of Korolev) permitted to economize the municipal budget expenditures for the energy subsidies to the mentioned municipal consumers till 10-20%.

Researches of the risks appraisal in processes of the municipal property development have been developed. The efficiency indexes of investment projects (chosen earlier: the net present value and internal rate of return) were widen for an investment portfolio risk appraisal.

The joint distance teaching laboratory was founded by IPPI and Oxford Brookes University. It was continued an adaptation of teaching modules on real estate management from the Oxford Brookes University - School of Real Estate Management to different higher education teaching programmes. Some modules were tested in different Russian universites of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg and professional training seminars in Moscow and Oxford.

LECTURES and TALKS

M.Soloviev acted as an invited lecturer and speaker at following events:

1) as an official visiting-professor of the Oxford Brookes University (Oxford, UK) he gave lectures on Russian real estate property market and legislation system at the University in February-97.

Automation and Remote Control is a semi-monthly journal published in English by Plenum Publishing Corp., 233 Spring St., New York, NY 10013, USA.

Automation and Remote Control contains research and survey articles in the following and related areas:

In April 1936, the first issue of ⌠Avtomatika i Telemekhanika,■ a new journal of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was approved for printing. Its appearance was the fruit of the purposeful work of the Department of Technical Sciences of the Academy in coordinating the activities of many, yet isolated, teams of researches and engineers engaged in the early 1930s in the research and development of theoretical and practical problems in the field of automatic control. In 1934, the Presidium of the Academy set up a Commission on Automation and Remote Control headed by Academician A.A.Chernyshov (1882-1940) and working on a voluntary basis. In 1935, it organized an All-Union Conference on Automation, Remote Control, and Dispatching with the representative participation of six hundred persons. In 1936, ⌠Avtomatika i Telemekhanika,■ the first journal in the world devoted especially to the issues in control theory, came off press. Its first Editor-in-Chief was A.A.Chernyshov, who was replaced in 1938 by Correspondent Member of the Academy V.I.Kovalenkov (1884-1960). The frequency of publication was six issues per year, the annual volume was about fifty quires, and the prewar circulation varied from about twenty-five hundred to thirty-three hundred copies.

After the first three issues of 1941, publication was interrupted by the war until 1946 when it was resumed in a reduced volume. From 1951, the Editorial Board of ⌠Avtomatika i Telemekhanika■ was chaired for more then thirty-five years by Academician V.A.Trapeznikov (1905-1994). Over this period, the scope of the journal substantially evolved and expanded to reflect virtually all subjects concerned in one way or another with the current science of control.

The journal has been a monthly publication since 1956. Furthermore, beginning with the first issue of that year, it has been translated into English and published in the United States under the title ⌠Automation and Remote Control■ by Plenum Publishing Corporation.

During its existence, ⌠Avtomatika i Telemekhanika■ has published about ten thousand papers and notes of authors from all republics of the former USSR and of many foreign researchers.

Automation and Remote Control is abstracted or indexed in Mathematical Reviews, Chemical Abstracts, Electronics and Communications Abstracts Journals, Current Contents, Engineering Index, Applied Mechanics Reviews, Computer and Information Systems Abstracts Journal, Zentralblatt fu r Mathematik, and Information Science Abstracts.
